Breede River

The Breede River is the longest river in the Western Cape, running 300 km from it's headwaters in the mountains above Ceres, through the beautiful Cape winelands, reaching the Atlantic Ocean at the small fishing village of Witsands.

Along the way the river grows in size and character, transforming from a small mountain stream filled with wild Rainbow Trout, through rapids and canyons until it opens out into the wide and fertile Breede River Valley near the town of Worcester. The river continues through lush winelands, past the town of Bonnievale, continuing through the rolling wheat fields around Swellendam. The river slows dows as it approaches the sea, passing the village of Malgas, before finally merging with the Atlantic Ocean at Witsands.

Smallmouth Bass can be caught in good numbers for the entire length of the river (Largemouth are also common), growing fairly large in the lower reaches from Worcester onwards. Access is mainly through private properties, fortunately there are numerous access points with camping, self catering bungalows and luxury lodges being plentiful.
