Darwendale Dam

Darwendale Dam, also known as Lake Manyame is home to some very large Florida strain Largemouth Bass. Descendants of some 2500 fingerlings imported to Zimbabwe in 1982 by Ray Scott, founder of BASS, the Bass of Darwendale are now legendary for their size and fighting spirit.

RECORD LARGEMOUTH  BASS

On July 25th 2004 Maxwell Mashandure caught a public bus from Harare and as he does regularly, rode the 76 odd km to his fishing spot on Lake Darwendale. That day he went down in history when, from his 8 foot, fiberglass canoe he landed the biggest Bass ever caught outside the USA and Mexico, an 8.2 kg (18 lbs 4 oz) monster on a 6 inch junebug senko.

CLOSE TO HARARE

Located 76 kilometres west of the capital city of Harare, within the Darwendale Recreational Park, the dam occupies a surface area of 8100 hectares. The dam wall is 2 kilometres long and the maximum water depth is 24 metres making this a fairly large but not very deep impoundment.

Darwendale has plenty of structure, including granite outcrops and several types of aquatic grass. The lake is located within a recreational park and has good launching and camping facilities. Darwendale is a venue for regular Bass angling tournaments including the annual Darwendale (CCC) Classic held in February each year.
